Pelvic floor dysfunction refers to a variety of conditions that affect the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues in the pelvic area, leading to issues such as urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, and sexual dysfunction. Common symptoms may include urinary urgency, frequency, or leakage, pelvic pain or pressure, painful intercourse, and difficulty emptying the bladder or bowels.
If you’re experiencing symptoms like urinary leakage, pelvic pain, or discomfort during intercourse, it’s advisable to seek evaluation by a pelvic floor specialist. Additionally, if you’ve recently given birth, undergone pelvic surgery, or have a history of pelvic trauma, you may benefit from pelvic floor therapy to address any potential issues.
During a pelvic floor therapy session, your therapist will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to assess your symptoms, medical history, and pelvic floor function. Treatment may involve a combination of manual therapy techniques, pelvic floor exercises, biofeedback, and lifestyle modifications tailored to your specific needs and goals.
The timeline for seeing results from pelvic floor therapy varies depending on the severity of your condition, your adherence to the treatment plan, and other factors. Some patients may experience improvement in symptoms within a few weeks, while others may require several months of consistent therapy to achieve optimal outcomes. Your therapist will work closely with you to track progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed to ensure the best possible results.
